West Malvern has 50 allotments of various sizes
and they are situated on either side of the lane that leads to Malvern Hills Outdoor Centre and Birches Farm. They were originally formed as "Birches Allotments" in about the 1850's and in 1919 the land was purchased by Malvern District Council from Madresfield Estate. They are owned and administered by the Parish Council, who collect rents in January of each year - the rent being 10p per sq. metre. Allotment holders sign a tenancy agreement that stipulates that plots and paths be kept in good order and no dogs are allowed on site. David Sharp, the Parish Clerk, manages the waiting list which is currently 43. Anyone interested in joining should contact him, his address is 20, Farley Road, Malvern Link and telephone no. 01684 573214.
West Malvern has an Allotment Association
which is chaired by Mick Aldridge. They organise inspections of plots, arrange social events and order seeds for members. The allotments are enjoyed by all ages - Age Concern have invested time and money on a plot for the not so active over 55's . Anyone interested in joining should contact Jenny Ward Robinson at Age Concern, telephone no. 01684 560666. Volunteers and new members from the village would be most welcome and would get to share the lovely produce.
Apart from the main purpose of growing great fruit and vegetables, the allotments offer a friendly social atmosphere in a very beautiful setting.

National Society of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners

Our Association, on your behalf, is a member of this Society, normally abbreviated to NSALG.   Briefly, it represents and publicises allotment gardening from country shows to parliament and beyond, provides advice, enables us to use the Kings seed scheme etc. If you want to know more about it look at the website, nsalg.org.uk.; to access the members' area, which includes an often interesting magazine, our user name is t4740 and our password 7221.

When you get your rental request from the Parish Council you will see that there is a levy of £3 per plot holder which comes to our Association to cover membership of NSALG and our public liability insurance.

Re-pegging

Jim has now finished re pegging the allotments using pegs which have been painted white and left proud of the ground to be more visible.  PLEASE DO NOT REMOVE THESE PEGS!! Any other pegs are now redundant and can be removed.  If anyone has any queries about the pegging please contact Jim on jim@jwnisbet.f2s.com, phone 561323.

Link nurseries now has its website up and running, www.worcsmhp.nhs.uk/link-nurseries.aspx

Remember that the Link is always grateful for donations of surplus seed, seedlings and equipment.
They are particularly in need of gardening and DIY tools, screws, nails, wheelbarrows etc.

They will be having stalls at the Spring Gardening Show (10-13th May), Three Counties Show (15-17th June) and Westfest (14th July) so do go along and see them – or of course call in at their site in Hospital Lane Powick where they have plants etc on sale.

 Please remember.....

-to conserve water as much as you can

-not to lean anything against the boundary fences, especially the one between us and the community woodland, as this damages the fence.

There was a committee meeting on Monday 19th March, and the minutes have been put on the noticeboards and emailed to all those whose email address I have.  If you can get email, don't get a copy and would like to do so please let me know at jenny@jwnisbet.f2s.com.
