                                Malvern Compassionate Communication

Malvern now has an active practice group, Nonviolent Communication, more commonly known as NVC, based on Marshall Rosenberg’s work. It is often called Compassionate Communication which may help describe it better.

NVC is the name of a method of communicating based on feelings and needs, where we learn to listen empathically, where we find we have a choice not to hear blame and criticism. It enables us to make deeper, more meaningful connections with others and to express ourselves without fear of upsetting the listener. As we become more adept at the methods we find that working with our feelings can lead to a clearer understanding of our needs and, connecting empathically to our needs we can make requests that are not heard as demands, and thus we are more likely to get our needs met.

In our group we practice using NVC with exercises, games, discussion and by using the “Dance Floor” a tool developed by Bridget Belgrave and Gina Lawrie, that uses a floor map to visually and energetically clarify the components of NVC.

The group is organised by Jane Charles who is an NVC trainee facilitator, not yet certified, and jointly led by her and two other trainees, one of whom is very experienced and could be certified anytime. The group currently meet fortnightly, on Monday evenings, and there is discussion about meeting during daytimes too.

People wishing to learn more can contact Jane on 01886 884740. In order to join in the group people will need to have experienced some teaching days. Jane will be organising some of these from time to time and can inform you of other ones happening in the region. People usually start with a foundation training which takes 2 days, and reading the book that explains all about NVC written by the founder - Marshall Rosenberg - called Nonviolent Communication - A Language of Life.
