St James's
is a
church in the heart of the village of
West
Malvern and warmly welcomes
all to
share in its life and worship.
The
origins of a church in West Malvern go back to saving the villagers a trek down to the church
in Mathon - and back up again! The present St James’s was consecrated in
1871, replacing a smaller building from the early 1840’s. Beautifully
set in its extensive churchyard and commanding wonderful views, it is a
Grade II listed Victorian building of great worth, not least with its
lovely stained glass. Recent improvements, adding a toilet and a galley
kitchen, make it a splendid facility both as a religious centre and a
focus for the local community, where on special occasions we can come
together.
Future
Plans:
Having
refurbished the Tower we now plan to install a new lighting system.
Our Vicar has the care of St James’s and
Holy
Trinity Church at Link Top and in West Malvern his ministry is shared
with a curate, a non-stipendiary deacon, local retired clergy, and
members of the congregation. Congregations tend to be small, but perhaps
for this reason the atmosphere is friendly and open.
Other activities include a
Quiet
Church evening each month for informal reflection and prayer, whilst the
church is open every day of the year for anyone who wishes to drop in
for a moment of peace and spiritual refreshment. You are most welcome at
any time.
Music.
In this area we are very lucky. The organ was quite recently
refurbished and we are blessed with a splendid organist and choirmaster.
Visiting organists are also keen to play here. We do not have a weekly
choir, but the Christmas Candlelight Service is always a marvellous
occasion and we are lucky to be the venue for visiting groups, such as
the Malvern College Chamber Choir, Colla Voce and the Vital Spark West
Gallery Quire. Internationally known performers – Wayne Marshall and
Nigel Kennedy - have played here!
Links with the Wider Community.
Community support is very strong indeed, as has been proved in the
recent past when funds were needed for the new kitchen and toilet and
then for the organ:
West
Malvern really rallied round!
The
Friends
of St James’s
regularly put on events to raise funds for the
upkeep of the building and churchyard and help foster links between
church and village. Meanwhile on the church’s side there is support for
the Primary School, some financial as this is a Church of England
school, and through visits and input from the clergy; the children often
use the church, for example for their Nativity Play and the Christingle
Service, and on Christmas Eve there was a delightful Crib Service.
The monthly Hills Echo magazine is very much a church magazine
and a village magazine, delivered free by volunteers to nearly every
household in
West
Malvern. To contribute or advertise please contact the Editor David
Matthews.
The
Churchyard
is a public space, attractive, tranquil and open to everyone. Many pass
through or visit, churchgoers or not, and we try our very best to
maintain and enhance its beauty, aided by funds from the Friends, the
Primary school, occasional volunteer gardening squads, the Malvern Area
of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and teams from the Probation Service. A
great deal of work has been done on the trees and by increasing the
stock of flowering plants. In season it is now quite a show!
Contacts:
St
James’s is a lovely church for a baptism, a wedding, or, in sad times, a
funeral. In all such cases, our clergy are at your disposal, as they are
to counsel in bereavement or other crises.
Please contact the Vicar in the first instance:
Revd
David Nichol,
The Vicarage, 2 North Malvern Road, WR14 2WD. Tel: 01684 561126 Mail:

For questions relating to the maintenance and use of the churchyard
and the building, and to submissions to the Hills Echo, you can also
contact the Churchwarden, David Matthews, Tel: 01684 567328.

Many have seen the face from which
we take the time - few have seen what keeps it

The
Friends of the Parish Church of St James, West Malvern
Local papers and the Hills Echo
often carry reports about the activities of the “friends”, but who or
what are they?
A local
registered charity: Charity number 1069239. The Friends were registered
with the Charities Commission in 1998 with the object of raising funds
for the maintenance, protection and improvement of the Church, its
contents and the churchyard.
Although the Church is guaranteed three representatives, including
the Vicar, on the Executive Committee, membership is open to anyone who
has the good of the parish church at heart. The total committee
membership is twelve but some members join only for the duration of a
project while others are in danger of becoming fixtures!
The Friends is not a Church body,
it responds to the needs of the Church but operates totally
independently. Funds cannot be transferred to the Parochial Church
Council without the approval of the Executive Committee and then only to
fulfil the charitable aims of the Friends
A successful fund raiser: To date the Friends have paid for the
repair to the East end of the roof and made funds available towards the
refurbishment of the organ and the domestic area in the West end of the
church. Currently our major contribution is the maintenance of the
churchyard which we hope will benefit many who don’t otherwise visit the
Church. The “West Malvern Book” and the brochure on Roget, which raise
funds may soon be joined by a guide to the Church
Fund raising has included a “Buy a Tile” scheme and the West
Malvern Calendars, which have now been adopted by the village school.
Concerts, travel talks and meals have all added to the funds
But now : By mutual agreement the Friends have cut back on fund
raising during the school’s building campaign but it is time to plan for
the future. Age and poor health have caught up with some of our members
(including our publicity specialist, Colin Jackson) and ideas and bodies
would be very welcome. The committee meets about six times a year with
smaller groups working on events as they arise.
Please : If you would like to be involved in any way contact one of the
following
westmalvern@supaworld.com (Norman Bennett)
Rev Rosemary Herbert
