Village
Hall Notice
Board:
Having just had our AGM, it might be a good time to remind ourselves how
important our West Malvern Village Hall is.
Even if individuals cannot immediately think of wanting to use it,
they may want to consider that one day, some or many may need a
temporary shelter due to an unfortunate mishap. We all of course hope
this need will never arise! Also up to a hundred villagers can have a
hastily organized meeting if required. The hall is there for every
villager; it is kept in good repair and has been improved by making
the Fisher Hall dry, carpeted and comfortable - ideal for meetings,
study and small gatherings. We are now having a record amount of
parties. The hall is safe for children under parental supervision with
toys, if required, free to use. The hall always had a friendly aura of
permanence and it is this trust's intention to keep improving it and
keep it available for our villagers, as well as those not living in West
Malvern. Check availability by going to 'Events - Bookings' If you
want to make a difference, feel free to join us.

“Village Halls are vitally important…local
services won’t survive let alone thrive without a roof over their head”
- Margaret Beckett, Rural Revival Conference, Local Government
Association, February 2003.
England
has approximately 9000 village halls
and this represents the largest network of community facilities in rural
Britain today.
The
“West Malvern Institute”
as it was then known was set up in 1885 as the result of a deed of
settlement from two sisters – Katherine Hopton and Deborah Hopton, who
were both unmarried and resided in West Malvern. In more recent years
the hall’s fabric and facilities have been improved thanks to a generous
legacy from another unmarried long term West Malvern resident – Maud
Biggin.
The
West Malvern Village Hall Trust
is the body currently responsible for ensuring that the village hall
remains a safe and accessible building which is available to
accommodate a range of social, cultural and leisure activities.
The
majority of hall bookings
come from regular use of the hall by local groups falling into one of
the above categories. Individuals looking for a venue for a special
family event or celebration can also book the hall.
The
Trust Committee
is accountable to the Charities Commission. It meets monthly to monitor
the provision at the hall, arrange any repairs or maintenance works
required and organizes occasional fund raising events (to provide
additional finance for maintaining the fabric
of the hall and its contents) The committee also organises the
monthly coffee morning (first Thursday in each month), which is held
at
the hall. Visitors to the coffee morning are able to access the West
Malvern Archive (owned by the West Malvern Parish Council) The
monthly winners from the Village Hall 100 Club also takes place at this
coffee morning.
At the present time the Worcester Diocese holds the freehold of
the hall premises but it is anticipated that the freehold will shortly
be transferred to West Malvern Parish Council. This transfer is fully
supported by the Trust committee members who look forward to the
partnership working with the parish council for the benefit of current
and future villagers.
